FRANKLIN, Tenn.– Popular consumer financial advice guru Dave Ramsey is continuing his outspokenness in opposition to credit card debt—or even having credit cards at all.
During the Ramsey Show, he frequently advises callers to avoid nearly all forms of non-housing consumer debt, and that most especially includes credit cards.

During an interview as part of Tucker Carlson’s podcast, Carlson asked Ramsey, “What’s wrong with having a credit card if you pay the balance every month?”
Ramsey simply replied: “Most people don’t,” noting that 78% of consumers with credit cards have a revolving balance.
“Everybody talks about this theoretical discipline that they just freaking don’t have,” Ramsey commented during the interview.
An ‘All-Time High’
Citing recent data from the Federal Reserve, Yahoo Finance noted that 82% of U.S. adults had at least one credit card in 2023, and by the third quarter of 2024, the number of credit card accounts had reached an all-time high of 600.53 million.
On his website, Dave Ramsey recommends paying off smaller balances first because it’s more psychologically rewarding and therefore easier to sustain.
