Families Started Lining Up at 5:30 a.m. as Pelican CU Gives Away $10K in Free Groceries

HOUMA, La.– With some recipient families arriving as early as 5:30 a.m. at Cannata’s Family Market here, Pelican Credit Union distributed $10,000 worth of free groceries among 200 local families, with each household receiving $50.

The funds were distributed as part of the credit union’s “Pelican Pays” initiative.

“Beyond the groceries themselves, participants also walked away with branded Pelican bags and special merchandise from the credit union’s team members, who were on hand to personally greet every shopper,” Houma Today reported. “The spirit of service was evident throughout the event, with Pelican staff members rolling up their sleeves to assist cashiers with bagging purchases and helping customers navigate their shopping experience.”

‘Stretched Thin’
Added CEO Jeff Conrad in a statement to the publication, “We recognize that household budgets are being stretched thin these days. What sets us apart from other financial institutions is our commitment to returning more resources directly to our communities than anyone else in Louisiana.”

Houma Today reported the impact resonated deeply with participants, including one grateful customer who noted how the program created opportunities for those facing financial constraints.

Giving Back
Pelican Credit Union, which is a CDFI, said it has consistently given back to communities across the state for decades.

“Originally, credit union employees would spontaneously visit local eateries and coffee establishments to cover meals for unsuspecting patrons,” the report stated. “The overwhelmingly positive community response led to the development of a more structured program, partnering with local businesses like Cannata’s to maximize impact.”
