ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.— A St. Petersburg man has been arrested after allegedly posing as a credit union employee and stealing more than $20,000 from two members.
Police said Akbar Hasssan Vann, 37, is accused of contacting two Suncoast Credit Union customers by phone around July 16, 2025, claiming to be a member of the institution’s fraud department, WFLA reported.

According to an arrest report cited by WFLA, Vann told the victims their accounts had been compromised and instructed them to provide their online banking information to resolve the issue. After obtaining the information, authorities said $21,601 was transferred from the victims’ accounts into an account belonging to Vann between July 16 and July 21.
Documenting the Activity
Investigators alleged Vann then withdrew the funds through cash withdrawals and point-of-sale transactions in St. Petersburg and nearby Pinellas Park, WFLA reported.
Authorities said the activity was documented through bank records, fraud reports from Suncoast Credit Union and video surveillance, according to WFLA.
Vann has been charged with scheme to defraud involving an amount between $20,000 and $50,000, police said.
