“This award from the Institute for Financial Literacy is an affirmation of Workers Credit Union’s commitment to making financial education available to all,” Flannery said. “We saw there was a need for an inclusive financial learning environment for people who are neurodivergent. With the help of my nonprofit partners, I created a safe space for students of all abilities to learn about banking and how to manage their finances that is tailored to their needs and how they learn best.”
Classes involve interactive, hands-on activities that keep students engaged, along with videos about financial issues that feature closed captioning to reinforce the content being presented. Topics include what financial records are important to keep, how to interact with a teller, and tips for avoiding fraud.
“The class is a safe space for students of all abilities to learn about banking and how to manage their finances, which improves their chances of success,” the CU said.
Workers Credit Union’s partners in this project include the Seven Hills Foundation and the Nashoba Regional School District.
