PORTLAND, Maine – Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) told Maine Credit Union League’s (MCUL) Annual Convention that credit unions are “valued partners” for the state’s citizens.
“For 88 years, the Maine Credit Union League has helped move our state forward. More than 750,000 individuals, families, and businesses are grateful for your commitment to their financial security and well-being,” Collins said as part of her prepared remarks. “Maine credit unions are valued partners of innovators, job creators, and the hard-working people of our state. You have taken on a vital role as protectors of our most vulnerable friends, neighbors, and family members. I look forward to continuing to work with you to help Mainers meet their financial needs and achieve their dreams.”
Program Protecting Seniors is Highlighted
Collins further commended Maine credit unions for their leadership in protecting older adults from financial exploitation, and highlighted Maine’s first-in-the-nation “Senior$afe: program, which trains financial employees to recognize the warning signs of fraud and exploitation. Collins office noted that she authored the bipartisan Senior Safe Act, which was based on this Maine program and signed into law in 2018 to expand these protections nationwide.
In addition, Collins recognized the success of the MCUL’s Campaign for Ending Hunger, which raised nearly $1.5 million in 2025 and has raised more than $16.3 million since it began in 1990. She also applauded Maine credit unions for contributing a record-breaking 36,000 hours of volunteer service last year and for their continued work to provide financial education to students, older adults, and food pantry clients.
