Senator Calls for Pulte to Resign as Director of FHFA, Acting Director of National Intelligence

WASHINGTON — Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is calling for Bill Pulte to resign from his positions as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and acting director of national intelligence, citing a Democratic Senate report that accuses him of abusing his authority and lacking the qualifications for the intelligence role, according to Realtor.com.

Warren’s statement followed the release of a report prepared by Democratic staff of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs that criticized Pulte’s leadership of the FHFA and questioned his appointment to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on an acting basis.

Elizabeth Warren

“Bill Pulte has spent the last year at FHFA as Donald Trump’s attack dog, abusing every tool at his disposal to investigate the President’s perceived political enemies,” Warren said in a statement reported by Realtor.com. She added that his reported actions at the intelligence agency raise concerns about national security.

The Allegations

According to Realtor.com, the Senate report alleges Pulte used the FHFA to pursue politically motivated investigations involving New York Attorney General Letitia James, Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook, all of whom were publicly accused by Pulte of mortgage fraud. Realtor.com reported those cases either did not result in criminal charges or remain unresolved.

The report also alleges Pulte sought to pressure President Donald Trump to remove then-Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell by publicly criticizing Powell and drafting a proposed termination letter.

In addition, Democratic staff accused Pulte of improperly restructuring the leadership of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac while serving as FHFA director and questioned his handling of personnel decisions within the agency.

Tenure is Defended

An FHFA spokesperson defended Pulte’s tenure in a statement to Realtor.com, saying his leadership at the FHFA, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac has helped carry out the agency’s statutory responsibilities while supporting homeownership.

Pulte has led the FHFA since April 2025 and was named acting director of national intelligence by President Trump in June. According to Realtor.com, the appointment drew bipartisan criticism because Pulte has no previous experience in intelligence, military or law enforcement.

President Trump has described the appointment as temporary, while Pulte continues to serve in both roles, Realtor.com reported.
