CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Bank of America is tightening its remote-work policy beginning in September, prohibiting eligible employees from working from home on two consecutive business days, according to HR Dive.
The change, which takes effect in mid-September, means employees will no longer be able to use Friday and Monday as their two remote days to create a four-day stretch away from the office, including the weekend.
Employees were notified of the change in a letter earlier in August, a Bank of America spokesperson told HR Dive.

The policy does not increase the number of days eligible employees are required to work in the office. Bank of America will continue its hybrid schedule requiring those workers to be in the office at least three days a week, a standard the Charlotte-based bank has maintained since 2022.
Client-facing employees will not be affected by the change because they already work in the office five days a week, according to HR Dive.
Seeking to Spread Out Remote Days
Bank of America is seeking to spread employees’ remote days more evenly throughout the week to encourage in-person collaboration and make more effective use of its office space. The approach could also reduce overcrowding in offices from Tuesday through Thursday, when hybrid employees have tended to concentrate their in-office days.
A bank spokesperson said the policy reflects employee feedback and takes into consideration the type of work employees perform as well as the needs of customers and clients, HR Dive reported.
The spokesperson said employees’ ability to collaborate helps produce better outcomes for customers, clients and co-workers.
More ‘Flexibility’ Cited
Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan described the company’s approach to hybrid work when the three-day office requirement was being implemented in 2022.
“We’ll have more flexibility than we did, on paper, before,” Moynihan said at the time. But, he added, “we’ll have more formality to the flexibility.”
The latest change comes as other large financial institutions have moved toward more restrictive return-to-office policies following the widespread adoption of remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Online Speculation
Some Bank of America employees discussing the change on Reddit speculated that the new restrictions could be a step toward requiring employees to work in the office five days a week, according to HR Dive. Bank of America, however, has not announced such a requirement.
Charlotte-based Truist began requiring employees to work in the office five days a week in January, while JPMorgan Chase implemented a five-day in-office requirement in January 2025, HR Dive reported.
