Data Breach Confirmed at Neighbors CU; Law Firms Seeking Plaintiffs

ST. LOUIS.–Plaintiffs are being sought for lawsuits that have been filed against Neighbors Credit Union in the wake of a data breach.

ClassAction.org reported it is working with attorneys to explore whether the litigation would qualify for class action status.

On May 8, Neighbors Credit Union reported a data breach potentially involving numerous pieces of personal information on members.

“The incident was detected when suspicious activity was found on the Missouri-based credit union’s computer network,” ClassAction.org stated. “Neighbors Credit Union launched an internal investigation, informed law enforcement and secured its systems. A forensic security firm was also engaged to assist.”

According to the report, the investigation revealed that an unauthorized third party accessed the system between Sept. 20-21, 2024, obtaining certain files. On Jan. 14, 2025, it was confirmed that these files contained personal data, ClassAction.org said.

Authorities Notified

According to a report submitted to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, the Neighbors Credit Union data breach potentially exposed Social Security numbers, financial account information, credit/debit card numbers and driver’s licenses. The website for the Texas Attorney General’s Office indicates that names, medical information and dates of birth may have also been compromised, ClassAction.org said.

Approximately 2,406 members in Texas have been affected, and another in 1,727 the filings indicate.

In a separate report, the ransomware group BLACK SUIT has reportedly claimed responsibility and posted the incident on a dark web site hosted on the Tor network, according to Claim Depot.

The $544.2-million Neighbors CU has more than 47,000 members.
