BIRMINGHAM, Ala.– AmFirst and the Children’s of Alabama INDY Grand Prix recognized Nate Burch, director of choirs at Pell City High School and Duran Junior High School, as the 2025 Education Champion of the Year.
The award celebrates educators who go above and beyond to empower students, create inclusive learning environments, and make a lasting impact in their communities.
Multiple families and students nominated Mr. Burch for his remarkable leadership, creativity, and unwavering dedication to his students, qualities that have transformed the choir program at Pell City High School, AmFirst said.
“His classroom is described as a sanctuary where every student, regardless of talent or background, is welcomed, encouraged, and celebrated,” the CU added.
“He has created a space where judgment is replaced with encouragement,” wrote one nominator. “Students don’t just learn to sing. They learn to believe in themselves.”

Mr. Burch was honored with a $5,000 classroom grant to support his ongoing efforts in growing the choir program.
“From investing in performances and student competitions to enhancing classroom tools and musical resources, the grant will help expand opportunities for students and strengthen the impact of music education at Pell City High School,” AmFirst stated.
“Mr. Burch is the kind of teacher who reaches beyond the curriculum; he connects with students, builds confidence, and inspires them to shine,” said Kevin Morris, President and CEO of AmFirst. “We are proud to recognize his
incredible contributions and commitment to shaping the next generation.”
The Education Champion of the Year program, powered by AmFirst, invites students and families across 13 Alabama counties to nominate exceptional teachers for this honor. It is one of the many ways AmFirst invests in
local education and uplifts those making a difference in the classroom daily.
