Arrests Made in Jackpotting Scheme That Hit CU’s ATM; Potentially Many Others

CANON CITY, Colo.—Three men have been arrested for allegedly having stolen  $68,000 from a credit union ATM as part of a jackpotting scheme.

According to. Canon City, an ATM at Power Credit Union was hit as part of what police believe to be a string of related incidents in Colorado and Nebraska, 

Arrested as suspects were:

  •  Joel Alejandro Morantes-Leal, who was charged with cyber crime ($20k – $100k), felony; financial device theft ($20k – $100k), felony, and third-degree burglary, misdemeanor
  • Also charged were. Endis Gonzalez Ortega and Isabella De Los Angeles Sulbaran, who are  also facing charges in the Canon City theft.

According to KRDO, arresting documents say the trio was arrested in late May in the Denver area and then taken to the Aurora, Colo. ICE facility. All three are undocumented immigrants. 

As the CU Daily reported earlier, ATM jack potting, in which malware is used to get the machines to dispense cash, was flagged during the recent TruStage Discovery Conference as one of the cyberthreats that has experts most concerned.
