LAS VEGAS–In conjunction with World Hunger Day, Clark County Credit Union (CCCU) partnered with HELP of Southern Nevada to host a cereal drive benefiting the Shannon West Homeless Youth Center (SWHYC).
Thanks to the generosity of CCCU employees, 723 cereal boxes and nearly $1,500 in monetary donations were collected to help nourish and support local youth experiencing or at risk of homelessness, the credit union said.
Youth homelessness in Clark County continues to rise, and is driven by several key factors, including family conflict, emotional abuse, housing instability, economic hardship and aging out of the foster care system. In the 2024 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report To Congress conducted by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, from 2023 to 2024, Nevada has the fifth largest increase of unaccompanied youth homelessness rate in the country with 27%.
This is where SWHYC, operated by HELP of Southern Nevada, steps in to provide safe housing and essential services to approximately 500 young people aged 16 to 24 each year, including education support, job assistance, mental health resources, and life skills training, according to CCCU.
“We’re incredibly proud of our employees who stepped up with compassion and generosity to donate to those struggling in our community,” CEO Matt Kershaw said in a statement.
