PAPILLION, Neb.–Cobalt Credit Union and its charitable arm, the SAC Foundation, are reporting they have helped a local veteran and his family remain in their home through a $25,000 donation.
According to the $1.33-billion Cobalt CU, the funds are to help Ron Hernandez, a U.S. Air Force veteran and founder of the nonprofit Moving Veterans Forward, who recently faced losing his home while battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
“Despite having helped more than 3,400 fellow veterans find housing through his organization, Hernandez found himself in urgent need—facing a $47,000 deadline to purchase the house he and his wife have called home for decades,” the credit union said in a statement.
‘Goes Beyond Banking’
“At Cobalt, our commitment to veterans and the military community goes beyond banking—it’s about doing what’s right when it matters most,” President and CEO Robin Larsen said in a statement. “Ron has given so much to others through his work. It was our honor to help give back to him.”
The donation was made through the SAC Foundation, which supports causes aligned with military, community, and charitable needs across the region. Together, with additional contributions from the Papillion Community Foundation, local organizations, and individual donors, more than $91,000 was raised—ensuring the Hernandez family can stay in the home where they raised their children and care for their grandchildren, the credit union reported.
‘Never Asks for Help’
“Ron never asked for help for himself. His entire mission has always been serving others,” said SAC Foundation Board Chair Keli Wragge said in a statement. “It’s our turn to serve him.”
