WASHINGTON–Republican members in the House responsible for writing changes to the tax code have reportedly discussed credit unions’ tax-exempt status, according to a new report.
Punchbowl News, which covers the Hill, said the GOP talked about the issue during their weekly lunch as they work through a range of options to boost revenue as part of the reconciliation package.

The House Ways and Means Committee’s GOP staff presented on credit unions’ tax-free status, according to Punchbowl News.
The report said the discussion of credit unions’ tax status followed a broader policy discussion the committee had already held on the tax-exempt sector, “which has been a big focus of the panel under Chair Jason Smith (R-Mo.) and could be a source of offsets for the GOP’s tax package,” Punchbowl News said.
The discussion took place during the same week credit union representatives are in Washington as part of America’s Credit Unions GAC. The potential loss of the tax exemption was the subject of significant discussion during the meeting during which the trade group launched its “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” campaign.
