WASHINGTON–With the federal government again set to run out of money in September unless Congress provides a continuing resolution or approves longer-term funding, the debate surrounding the issue could complicate passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), according to the Defense CU Council.

It’s just another challenge for legislation that credit unions are already wary of becoming a vehicle for carrying other legislation they oppose, most especially the Credit Card Competition Act.
Taking a ‘Hostage’
Jason Stverak, chief advocacy officer with the DCUC, said he would “not put it past” some members of Congress to “try to hold the bill hostage” by attaching the credit card legislation to a funding bill. As Stverak reminded, there was an earlier attempt to attach it to the recently passed GENIUS Act.
“We just know that any must-pass piece of legislation there will be a discussion and possible fight over this issue,” Stverak said.
Reminder About Shutdown
The other related issue DCUC continues to remind credit unions to give attention is that any government shutdown will mean immediate financial strain for many CU members who are paid by the government, especially members of the military.
