ATLANTA–The Georgia Credit Union Association, a subsidiary of The League of Credit Unions, recognized former Senator John F. Kennedy (SD-18) as the recipient of the 2025 State Lawmaker of the Year Award in Georgia, honoring his leadership and support of credit unions and the members he serves.
“Senator Kennedy has been a consistent and trusted advocate for credit unions, not just in principle, but in action,” said Sydney Seral, Chief Advocacy Officer at The League. “From carrying Georgia’s Annual Charter Enhancement Bill to pushing back against proposals that would have restricted interchange income and access to affordable financial services, he has repeatedly stood up for policies that protect credit union members and the communities they serve.”
The association said that since joining the Georgia State Senate in 2015, Senator Kennedy has demonstrated a strong commitment to public service and an understanding of the role financial institutions play in supporting individuals, businesses, and local economies.

“Through his leadership as President Pro Tempore, service on key committees, including his role as Vice Chair of Banking and Financial Institutions, and engagement on critical policy issues, Sen. Kennedy has helped advance initiatives that strengthen access to financial services across Georgia,” the GCUA said.
It added that his professional background further provides a thoughtful and balanced approach to policymaking.
“I am humbled to receive this recognition from Georgia’s credit unions as the 2025 State Lawmaker of the Year,” said Kennedy. “Credit unions fill a critical role by expanding financial access, supporting small communities, and serving those who might otherwise be overlooked. I value their partnership and remain committed to balanced, thoughtful policy that enables them to serve Georgians effectively.”
“Strong advocacy requires lawmakers who are willing to engage, listen, and lead,” shared Samantha A.M. Beeler, president of The League of Credit Unions & Affiliates. “Former Senator Kennedy has shown time and again that he understands the impact financial policy has on real people. His leadership, particularly in opposing harmful proposals and advancing balanced solutions, has helped ensure credit unions can continue fulfilling their mission across Georgia.”
