Greater Eastern CU Unveils New Name, Branding

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.–Greater Eastern Credit Union has announced a new name and a new brand.

The $56.5-million CU is now Greater Experience Credit Union.  Credit Union.

“This name change isn’t about who we serve, it’s about how we serve,” CEO Cantrell said in a statement. “Greater Experience Credit Union reflects our promise to meet members where they are today and help them confidently move toward what’s next.”

The credit union said the change reflects its focus on partnership, personal service and financial guidance, as well as reflects a “commitment to listening, encouraging growth, providing clear paths forward and celebrating milestones alongside members.”

Several Earlier Name Changes

The name is just latest for GECU, which was founded in 1952, as Mountain Home VA Employees Credit Union, before becoming Government Employees Credit Union of East Tennessee, and later to Greater Eastern Credit Union. It said each name change reflected an expanded FOM.

Greater Experience said the rebranding is part of a broader set of enhancements planned for 2026, including:

Major upgrades to online and mobile banking this fall

New tools for online scam risk assessments and dark web monitoring

The introduction of new products, including high-rate checking and savings accounts
