KAHALUI, Maui–Students on this island are participating in a student-operated credit union program launched by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui in partnership with HawaiiUSA FCU as part of an effort to provide hands-on financial education.
The Boys & Girls Clubs is the first to open a student-run credit union, according to the organization.
“Through the student-operated credit union, students are taking on roles including opening and managing savings accounts, handling deposits and learning basic banking procedures under the guidance of trained staff and credit union professionals,” the Boys & Girls Clubs said in a statement.
‘Accurate Financial Education’
It added that the partnership with HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union helps ensure the students receive accurate financial education while gaining exposure to career pathways in finance and business.
Another benefit of the credit union is that it strengthens family engagement by introducing parents and caregivers to financial tools and resources through their child’s participation in the program, the Boys & Girls Club said.
