Here is Some More of How CUs Gave Back During International Credit Union Week

YORK, Penn.–Credit unions are reporting a host of activities in their communities conducted as part of International Credit Union Week last week.

In addition to all the other efforts reported by the CU Daily, other credit union activities included:

Member Benefit Day in New York

In York, Penn., First Capital Federal Credit Union celebrated International Credit Union Day and continued its CU Kind Day celebration with a special Member Benefit Day at its branches that offered free lunches, giveaways, and prize drawings.

In addition, First Capital offered free shredding services at its West York office and helped members find over $20,000 in unclaimed property through the PA State Treasury.

“Member Benefit Day is all about showing our members how much we appreciate them,” SVP-Marketing Tara Houser said in a statement. “It’s also a great way to show how we’re more than just a financial institution. We are people helping people.”

First Capital said also sold candy bars at all branches to benefit the United Way of York County.

Impact Day in New Jersey

In Basking Ridge, N.J., Affinity Federal Credit Union (“Affinity”) hosted its fourth annual Impact Day by partnering Table to Table, New Jersey’s first and largest food rescue organization, to provide nearly 5,000 meals to local families in need.

More than 370 Affinity employees took part in the event at the credit union’s headquarters on Columbus Day/Indigenous People’s Day, Oct. 14, when branches were closed. Employees made meals, including sandwiches, snacks, and water, and wrote words of inspiration for recipients. The meals were distributed to 16 community non-profits across the northern half of New Jersey that work directly with individuals and families in need.

“This collective effort by Affinity’s employees across our footprint, from Lawrenceville, New Jersey to New Haven, Connecticut and everywhere in between hits at the core of our mission of people helping people,” President and CEO Kevin Brauer said in a statement. “The feeling of giving back to our communities is like no other. I’m proud of our work to tackle food insecurity and support some of those most impacted.”

The credit union said the event marked the largest single-day volunteer initiative in the history of Table to Table, which has partnered with community service groups across North Jersey since its inception in 1999.

Commemoration of ‘Impact’ in San Diego

North Island Credit Union and other CUs in San Diego marked International Credit Union Day  with a special celebration at its headquarters office. Credit union members, fellow San Diego credit unions and local elected officials came together to recognize the tremendous impact credit unions have on their members and local communities, the credit union said.

During the celebration, proclamations recognizing the contributions of credit unions to San Diego’s communities were presented by California Assemblymember Carl DeMaio (R-75) and representatives of California Assemblymember David Alvarez (D-80), California Sen. Catherine Blakespear (D-38), California Assemblymember Dr. LaShae Collins-Sharp (D-79), U.S. Rep. Scott Peters (D-Calif.), U.S. Rep. Juan Vargas (D-Calif.) and California Assembly member Christopher Ward (D-78).

Local credit unions participating in the event with North Island Credit Union included Cabrillo Credit Union, California Coast Credit Union, Frontwave Credit Union, Mission Federal Credit Union, San Diego County Credit Union and Wheelhouse Credit Union.

“International Credit Union Day is a time to celebrate the heart of the credit union movement: People Helping People. We’re proud to open our doors and come together with fellow San Diego credit unions, special guests, and most importantly, our members to honor this tradition,” North Island Credit Union President/CEO Steve O’Connell said in a statement. “This celebration is not only about looking back at our shared history, but also about reaffirming our commitment to serving our communities and building a stronger financial future for everyone.”

Give Back Day at Mazuma in Missouri

In Kansas City, Mo., Mazuma Credit Union held its annual Give Back Day, an organization-wide day of service to the Kansas City community, on Oct. 13th. This year, nearly 200 Mazuma Team Members shared their time and effort with 9 local non-profits at 15 locations across the city. The credit union said.

According to Mazuma, partner organizations receiving volunteer support during Give Back Day included YMCA of Greater Kansas City, the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium, Heart of America Humane Society, KC Shepherd’s Center, Community LINC, Wayside Waifs, CASA of Johnson and Wyandotte Counties, Hilcrest Thrift Store, and Lea McKeighan Park.

“This diverse array of local non-profit partners enabled Mazuma to make a positive impact on a wide range of populations throughout Kansas City,” the credit union said. “Give Back Day is part of the Credit Union’s 40 Hours for Good program, which provides Team Members with 40 hours of paid volunteer time each year to facilitate community engagement. Mazuma’s purpose is ‘Making Kansas City a Better Place to Live, Work, and Bank,’ and Give Back Day is one of many opportunities each year for team members to put this ethos into practice by volunteering with local organizations in support of their positive impact.”

‘Favorite Day of the Year’

“Give Back Day is my favorite day of the year! It’s always inspiring to come together with other Mazumans, roll up our sleeves, and make a real difference,” Alexa Graham, Mazuma’s digital services leader, said in a statement. “It makes me so proud to be part of Mazuma, because we create opportunities to go out and give back to our community.”
