Here’s Why 1 CU Hosted a Company-Wide ‘VolunTerra’

DENVER— Westerra Credit Union is reporting it commemorated National Volunteer Month with a company-wide event dubbed “VolunTerra.”

According to the credit union, the event also marked the first anniversary of Westerra Financial Literacy, a program designed to equip students and educators with essential financial knowledge. In its inaugural year, the initiative reached more than 2,800 students and community members, the credit union said.

A ’Showcase’

“VolunTerra 2025 brought our employees together for a day of community, collaboration and contribution,” SVP-Strategy and Performance Excellence Kirk Leverington said in a statement. “It showcased the values that drive us and the impact we can create when we work together, while giving us a chance to reflect on the success of our work over the past year. Ultimately, it served as a reminder that everything we do is for our members and the greater community.”

What Took Place

Westerra reported that during the day-long volunteer event its team members assembled nearly 1,000 educator and student kits for Mile High United Way and collected several hundred personal hygiene items to fulfill the urgent needs of students at Denver Public Schools.

Additionally, 267 employees participated in GoWest Credit Union Association’s “Bite of Reality” financial literacy simulation, a hands-on approach to teaching young people about real-world money management through fictional role-play.
