BUTTE, Mont. — A bank that had been locally owned since 1977 has officially opened as the first Montana-based branch of Idaho-based Frontier Credit Union.
As the CU Daily first reported here, the former First Citizens Bank of Butte was acquired by the credit union in mid-2025 and this week it said it is set to convert accounts and complete a full systems integration by August. Customers can continue accessing their current accounts as usual, but are encouraged to transition their accounts before August, the credit union said.

‘Building on Legacy’
“First Citizens Bank has a long history here in butte and we’re super excited about that history and the good things they’ve done in the community,” FCU President/CEO Dan Thurman said in a statement.
“We look forward to not only building on the legacy and the foundation that First Citizens has had, but we want to bring additional technology and services to the customers here.”
The credit union said the bank’s customers now gain access to frontier’s 15 Idaho branches, as well as range of products and services.
Frontier Credit Union was founded in 1935, making it Idaho’s oldest credit union. Frontier is the first credit union to fully acquire a bank in Montana.
