AUGUSTA, Maine—Members of credit unions in Maine will soon be banned from using their credit cards when gambling online following the signature of Gov. Janet Mills on a new piece of legislation.

It’s part of a larger, national effort to curb gambling addiction, according to WGME.
The new law prohibits gambling operators in Maine from accepting credit cards for either sports wagering or i-gaming, the report states.
WGME said supporters have pointed to research that shows use of credit cards in online gambling can directly lead to higher wagering amounts, increased gambling activity, and significant financial consequences.
Maine joins New Hampshire and Massachusetts, becoming the eighth U.S. state to put a policy like this in place.
