One CU Makes the Rankings of 10 Best Checking Accounts

SAN FRANCISCO–One credit union appears among the “10 Best Checking Accounts for June 2025” as listed by Nerdwallet. 

“The best banks for checking accounts have low fees, good customer support and free ATMs nearby,” Nerdwallet said in announcing its list. “Some also offer rewards or earn interest.

Connexus Credit Union in Wausau, Wis. was selected for, among other reasons, offering the “best checking rate,” with the credit union given an overall institution rating of 4.3 on a scale of 1-5.

‘Strong Offer’

“Connexus Credit Union has a strong checking account that offers the potential to earn high rates,” Nerdwallet said in its review, “Its mobile apps receive high ratings in app stores, and it’s part of a network of shared credit union ATMs and branches nationwide. The credit union’s savings account has no monthly fee, but it offers a relatively low rate.”

NerdWallet said the product is best for consumers who want checking and savings accounts with no monthly fees, can meet spending requirements to earn high rates on checking and don’t mind if their savings account doesn’t earn top rates.

The review said account’s pro’s include:

  • No monthly fees on checking or savings accounts.
  • Competitive-rate share certificates.
  • Anyone can become a member.
  • Large branch network.
  • ATM fee rebates.

It said the cons include:

  • Low rates on savings accounts.
  • High minimum opening deposits for share certificates.
  • Requirements must be met to earn strong checking rate.
