PenFed Foundation Raises More Than $1M Through Golf Classic

TYSONS, Va.,– The PenFed Foundation for Military Heroes, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting veterans in their transition from service to success, said it raised more than $1 million at the 22nd annual Military Heroes Golf Classic.

“For over 248 years, the brave service members of America’s Armed Forces have fought 12 wars to defend our freedom,” said James Schenck, president and CEO of PenFed Credit Union and CEO of the PenFed Foundation. “The success of our tournament enables us to continue taking care of our nation’s veterans. At PenFed, we never forget.”

Tee times began with a remembrance honoring 9/11 victims, their families and the nation’s heroes.

“We are thrilled to have raised over $1 million at the Military Heroes Golf Classic this year and look forward to continuing to support our military heroes who have made profound sacrifices for our nation,” said Andrea McCarren, president of the PenFed Foundation for Military Heroes. “Thanks to the commitment of our dedicated volunteers and donors over the past 24 years, the foundation has delivered financial support totaling more than $55 million and transformed the lives of more than 150,000 military families.”

The event honored veterans with several speakers highlighting experiences of courage and resilience.

The Speakers
• U.S. Army Capt. Mary Kolars, who deployed to Afghanistan as a Female Engagement Team leader with the 82nd Airborne Division. She later served as the CST officer in charge, supervising all training of the female Afghan Female Tactical Platoon.
• Nick Grillo, visionary and owner of Elevate Vending and participant in the PenFed Foundation Veteran Entrepreneur Program. He is an Operation Enduring Freedom and Air Force combat veteran with more than 12 years of service.
• Steven Wheatcroft, a former professional golfer who had an 18-year career on the PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour. He is CEO and founder of The Mulligan Foundation, which focuses on providing mental health services for athletes.
