DULUTH, Ga.— Platinum Federal Credit Union said it has suffered a data breach as the result of a compromised employee email account.

In a letter to members available here via the Massachusetts attorney general’s office, the $346 million Platinum FCU said it was alerted on March 27 of this year to “unusual activity” on that employee’s email, which prompted an investigation.
The credit union said it also retained a third-party forensic firm, with the investigation finding the unauthorized access may have contained member information, including Social Security numbers and account data.
PFCU said it has since implemented additional safeguards, and while it is “not aware of any misuse” of member information, it is offering free access to credit monitoring and identity protection through Experian.
Extra Vigilance Urged
In its letter to members, it urges extra vigilance for the next 12 to 24 months. At least one law firm has announced it is seeking plaintiffs.
Platinum Federal has approximately 13,000 members.
