PORTLAND, Ore. — Riders in the Portland metro area were able to ring in the New Year with free public transportation, thanks to a sponsorship by Oregonians Credit Union that covered fares on TriMet throughout New Year’s Eve.
TriMet said all bus, MAX light rail and WES Commuter Rail rides were free from the start of service on Dec. 31 through the early morning hours of Jan. 1, allowing revelers to travel safely without worrying about parking, traffic or impaired driving.

The credit union said the sponsorship was intended to promote safety, reduce drunk driving and support the region’s public transit system during one of the busiest nights of the year.
Keeping Community Safe
“Providing free rides on New Year’s Eve is a simple way to help keep our community safe while making it easier for people to celebrate responsibly,” the credit union said in a statement.
TriMet officials said New Year’s Eve traditionally brings a surge in ridership as residents and visitors attend concerts, parties and fireworks displays across Portland and surrounding communities.
Oregonians CU said the free-fare program also underscores its broader focus on community well-being, transit access and financial security, particularly during high-risk travel periods.
