Seeking to Open Its Doors This Month, African Diaspora FCU Launches ‘Urgent’ Campaign for Capital

ST. LOUIS–African Diaspora FCU, one of only two new federal credit union charters granted in 2025, has launched an “urgent” two-week fundraising campaign to raise the final capital needed to open its doors on Dec. 15.

According to the organization, the “100 for 1000” campaign is seeking 100 donors — credit unions, vendors, trade associations, and industry partners — to contribute $1,000 each, totaling $100,000 in foundational capital.

After a five-year chartering journey, ADFCU said it has exhausted much of its initial capital preparing its first branch in St. Louis. This final capital infusion will ensure regulatory strength and allow the credit union to begin serving members immediately upon opening, according to organizers.

“African Diaspora FCU represents the cooperative spirit that built our movement,” ADFCU CEO Michael Kodjo Anani said in a statement. “We are calling on the credit union industry to help us open our doors and bring fair, dignified financial services to a community long underserved by traditional institutions.”

In-Kind Support

The credit union said it has already received in-kind support and mentorship from organizations including CU*Answers and Together Credit Union, and a small credit union has pledged a $100,000 low-interest non-member deposit — demonstrating broad support for this mission.

  1. I am proud to be the small credit union that will be depositing the $100,000 CD, thanks to approval from my board of directors.

I am waiting for the big credit unions and trade associations to step in and help…. newly chartered credit unions are rare and valuable… especially if we expect to retain our tax exemption (because small CUs are the heart and soul, and they are rapidly disappearing).
