Settlement Reportedly Reached in Patelco CU Data Breach

DUBLIN, Calif. — Individuals affected by a 2024 data breach at Patelco Credit Union may be eligible for payments of up to $5,000 under a proposed $7.25 million class action settlement.

The settlement stems from a lawsuit alleging that unauthorized access to Patelco’s systems exposed members’ personally identifiable information during a cyberattack discovered in June 2024. Plaintiffs in the case claim the credit union failed to adequately safeguard customer data, while Patelco has denied wrongdoing and agreed to settle to avoid prolonged litigation, noted ClaimsDepot.com.

Under the proposed terms, class members — defined as individuals notified by Patelco in or around August 2024 that their information may have been compromised — can seek reimbursement of up to $5,000 for documented losses tied to the breach,  ClaimsDepot.com reported. Eligible expenses include credit monitoring, fees related to credit freezes, professional services and other costs associated with identity theft or fraud.

Those who do not submit documentation of losses may instead receive a pro rata cash payment estimated between $100 and $200, depending on the total number of claims filed, according to ClaimsDepot.com.

Deadline is July 11

Claims must be submitted by June 11, 2026, with a final approval hearing scheduled for July 1, 2026. Payments are expected to be distributed about 60 days after final court approval, the report said.

According to the report, the $7.25 million settlement fund will cover administrative costs, attorneys’ fees of up to approximately $2.5 million, service awards to class representatives and payments to approved claimants.

About the BreachThe breach was tied to a ransomware attack detected June 29, 2024, after unauthorized access to Patelco’s network began weeks earlier. The incident disrupted online banking services and exposed sensitive data — including names, Social Security numbers and other personal information — affecting roughly one-million current and former members, according to multiple news reports and regulatory disclosures. The attack shutdown Patelco’s online banking systems and even affected branch operations with employees unable to ascertain members’ account balances. The breach attracted considerable media attention
