LEXINGTON, Ky.—In a region and with a field of membership that is plenty knowledgeable and that has long memories when it comes to college basketball, University of Kentucky FCU has picked an ironic person to appear in its newest advertising, proving that 34 years is still not enough time to forget old wounds.
Former Duke University basketball star Christian Laettner, infamous among UK Wildcat fans for his last-minute buzzer beater to eliminate Kentucky 104-103 in overtime from the 1992 NCAA basketball tournament, appears in a new commercial by the $1.6-billion UKFCU.
The commercial, which uses the theme, “Hey, Kentucky, just a reminder, we’re here for all y’all,” and then shows various people in various situations asking, ‘What about me?” and “What about us?” The spokesperson repeatedly states, ‘We’re here for all y’all.”
‘What About Me?’
Laettner then appears, shooting a basket from the same spot in which he hit the shot in 1992, and asks, “At the buzzer, what about me?” He again makes the bucket.
“No,” says the spokesperson and all of the people who previously appeared in the ad.
The spokesperson reappears and says, “UK Credit Union: For all y’all. Except Christian Laettner.”
