TAMPA, Fla. — Suncoast Credit Union has awarded a year’s worth of free groceries to a longtime member as part of a promotional giveaway tied to direct deposit enrollment.

The credit union said Calvin McElroy of Auburndale received a $14,400 check during a March 19 ceremony after being selected as the winner of its Grocery Giveaway. The promotion invited members to enter by switching their direct deposit to Suncoast, while existing members with direct deposit were also eligible.
The giveaway comes as grocery prices remain elevated, the credit union noted.
“At Suncoast Credit Union, we pride ourselves on helping our members and the communities we serve,” said Kevin Johnson, president and CEO of Suncoast Credit Union, in a statement. “This is a huge example of that.”
Began as Music Teacher
According to Suncoast Credit Union, McElroy has been a member since 1989, when the institution primarily served educators. Around that time, he began teaching music at several elementary schools in Hillsborough County.
Roughly a dozen years later, McElroy transitioned to a role in the district’s administrative offices, where he continues to work. After nearly 38 years in education, he plans to retire later this summer, the credit union said.
“The school district has been good to me,” McElroy said in a statement. “It’s been very gratifying.”
