Two Men Arrested as Suspects in Larger Ring Robbing ATMs, Including at PFCU

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.–Two men from Texas have been arrested and are suspected with being part of a larger group that has robbing ATMs across the Midwest, including at Purdue FCU. 

The group, which allegedly stole nearly $135,000 from the CU’s machine, face multiple charges, including theft and corrupt business influence, according to the Journal Courier.

Jacoby Zachery Batiste and Dexter Robinson are two of a team of six Texans who police tied to the theft of PFCU ATM in January, the report said. Batiste, 24, and Robinson, 25, both of Houston, were arrested in Houston and are awaiting extradition to Tippecanoe County, Ind. to stand trial, West Lafayette police Detective Jon Eager told the publication. “Their standard procedures were to rent a vehicle in Texas, travel to the Midwestern city where they planned to target an ATM,” according to court documents. 

Cameras Set Up

The team set up surveillance on the targeted bank, according to prosecutors’ probable cause affidavit.”

“Just before the theft, the team purchased the tools to open the ATM and stole a large pickup truck from the area — typically a Ford F-350, according to a court document. Then early in the morning they allegedly hit the bank’s machine,” the Courier Journal reported. “After using the truck to allegedly pull the ATM off the mountings, they stole the money — almost $135,000 from the West Lafayette site. They then drove the stolen truck to a rendezvous site, ditch it and made their getaway, police said.”

Cash Found During Search

Police in Splendora, Texas stopped the car and a check turned up the vehicle was suspected of being used in the West Lafayette thefts. The car was searched and police found several stacks of cash totaling $12,294, according to the court document.Prosecutors suspect that the six Texans and their alleged crimes are part of a criminal gang, and they’ve filed a sentence-enhancing charge that might
