With Congress Facing Deadline, ACU Reports Uptick in ‘Organic’ Advocacy

WASHINGTON–As Congress heads toward Easter recess it is scrambling to move numerous big pieces of legislation, including a huge spending bill that includes President Trump’s desired tax cuts.

While the Senate has passed its Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Resolution, the road is expected to get rockier in the House. Credit unions, of course, remain highly wary of being swept up in some sort of bill that revokes the CU tax exemption as Congress looks for ways to offset the cost of the tax cuts.

America’s Credit Unions said it has begun to see some organically grown advocacy in social media by consumers related to defending the CU tax exemption.

“I think that is a testament that we have been strongly pushing all of our messaging across all sorts of different fronts and channels,” said Carrie Hunt, chief advocacy officer with America’s Credit Unions.

400K Messages

Hunt said the trade group’s grassroots “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” initiative has now generated  close to 400,000 messages that have been sent to Congress.

With the American Bankers Association hosting its Washington Summit this week at the convention center, Hunt said America’s CUs will be “sending a message to congressional offices highlighting some of the key differences between banks and credit unions.

“In particular, the one data point I think is incredibly important to note is that credit unions serve consumers, whereas community banks and bigger banks tend to serve businesses,” Hunt said.
