MIDDLETOWN, R.I.–People’s Credit Union said it is partnering with the Newport Gulls collegiate summer baseball team to launch the “Gully Youth Savings Account” to encourage children to save by teaching them good financial habits.
Named after the team’s mascot, the savings account is designed for children of all ages and has a tiered interest rate which rewards account holders for steady saving, according to the credit union, which said any child who signs up for a new account will receive a co-branded plush “Gully” toy at account opening and will be eligible for future discounts and promotions.

“Our nearly two-decade Gulls partnership has been about giving back to the families in our community,” PCU CEO Sean Daly said in a statement. “The Gully Youth Savings Account gives kids a fun, tangible way to start building good habits early. What I appreciate most about this is that the idea came directly from Leandra Mello, one of our Member Service Representatives, during a breakfast with the team. That’s exactly the kind of culture we’re building at People’s, where the best ideas can come from anywhere.”
A ‘No-Brainer’
Added Chuck Paiva, founder, director and president of the Newport Gulls, “Over the past 18 years, the Newport Gulls have been proud to partner with People’s Credit Union. Whether it be the Mascot Program, the FANatic About Reading Night, or the FANatic About Reading Program, the Newport Gulls have been blessed to work with such an impactful community partner, and more importantly, such a beloved member of our Gulls Family. Gully Youth Savings Account partnership was a no-brainer in the eyes of our organization as it only further deepens both the Gulls’ and People’s Credit Union’s commitment to putting the priorities of our neighbors first. The Gulls could not be happier to be a part of this launch, especially in the light of our organization’s 25th Anniversary Season in 2026. The Gulls are beyond excited for the official launch of this Gully Youth Savings Account Program, and we are ecstatic for many more seasons of a wonderful partnership with People’s Credit Union to come.”
FANatical Sponsorship
During the summer season, People’s Credit Union said it will once again sponsor the Gulls’ FANatic About Reading Program to promote the importance of reading for elementary school students on Aquidneck Island, hosting FANatic About Reading Night at Cardines Field in Newport on July 22nd to honor the students for their reading accomplishments.
