WASHINGTON–The Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) is calling on the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee to advance the nomination of John Crews to become the next chairman of NCUA during its executive session today.
“Strong NCUA leadership impacts more than credit unions; it impacts the millions of Americans who rely on these institutions for affordable financial services, trusted guidance, and economic opportunity,” Anthony Hernandez, DCUC President/CEO, Ret. U.S. Air Force colonel, said in a statement. “For military families, veterans, and communities across the country, a strong and stable credit union system is essential to financial readiness and resilience. Leaders who understand the cooperative model and the diverse needs of credit unions help ensure these institutions can continue delivering that important mission.”
In its letter, DCUC said Crews brings nearly 15 years of financial policy experience, including extensive work with the Senate Banking Committee on major financial services legislation. Following his nomination hearing, DCUC said in an earlier statement that Crews demonstrated understanding of the NCUA’s role in protecting the stability of the credit union system while applying effective, risk-based supervision.
Priorities Identified
DCUC highlighted several priorities reflected in Crews’ testimony, including:
- Maintaining the safety and soundness of the credit union system.
- Supporting efficient, risk-based supervision that recognizes differences among institutions.
- Preparing for technological innovation while protecting members.
- Encouraging the growth of new credit unions serving underserved communities.
- Preserving an accessible and transparent relationship between the NCUA and the credit union industry.
“John Crews brings the policy experience, regulatory understanding, and commitment to public service needed to help guide the NCUA at a critical time for the credit union system,” Jason Stverak, DCUC chief advocacy officer, said in a statement. “His record reflects a thoughtful approach to supervision, innovation, and ensuring credit unions of all sizes can continue serving their members and communities effectively.”
Andrews FCU Wins Award
Separately, DCUC said Andrews Federal Credit Union (USAG Wiesbaden in Germany) has been selected by the Department of the Army as the 2025 Army Distinguished Credit Union of the Year. Submissions were received and carefully reviewed by the United States Army Financial Management Command, Department of the U.S. Army, for consideration, according to DCUC.

DCUC noted that each year, the United States Army Financial Management Command requests nominations for the Army’s Distinguished Bank and Credit Union Service Awards. Since 1984, commanders have nominated their installation banks and credit unions on an annual basis. These awards recognize the on-post bank and credit union branches that have provided exceptional financial service and support to their communities.
