WASHINGTON—Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA.), the ranking member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, has released what she described as “troubling responses” from President Trump’s nominees to the Questions for the Record (QFRs), including the response from NCUA Board nominee John Crews.
Warren had submitted the questions prior to the nominees’ confirmation hearings on July 23.
“President Trump is running the most corrupt Administration ever and raising costs for families on everything from groceries to gas,” said Warren in a statement. “These nominees’ failure to answer basic questions for the record indicate that they will do nothing but help facilitate the President’s corrupt and chaotic agenda, while families across the country pay the price.”
In her QFRs, Warren said pressed Crews on the NCUA’s current Deregulation Project, the impact of crypto policies on credit unions, consumer protection issues, and his ability to act independently from President Trump.
“In his responses, Crews would not confirm that the law requires more than a single member to constitute a quorum, failed to provide views on the ongoing NCUA Deregulation Project, or answer straightforward questions about who won the 2020 presidential election or any other presidential election – saying that his ‘expertise is in financial services policy, not presidential history’,” Warren said in a statement.

Jeffrey Ledbetter, Nominee to be Inspector General for the Department of Housing and Urban Development
Warren pressed Ledbetter on recent cuts to HUD and HUD OIG staffing, whistleblower claims that HUD is failing to enforce fair housing laws and civil rights obligations, and Ledbetter’s ability to act independently from the president.
“In his responses, Ledbetter – who has no history working on housing or urban development issues – failed to demonstrate that he understands the OIG’s role in overseeing HUD’s compliance with statutory requirements, including those related to fair housing and civil rights,” Warren said. “He also refused to answer straightforward questions about who won the 2020 presidential election or any other presidential election, instead saying in part that he had “not reviewed the specific results from the election cited above.”

Christopher Phelan, Nominee to be Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers
Warren pressed Phelan on his loyalty to Trump, his view on the economic data under Trump – including inflation and job growth – and recommendations he would make to the president, if confirmed, to lower costs for the American people.
“In his responses, just as during his hearing, Dr. Phelan failed to provide straightforward factual answers based on the data – demonstrating his unwillingness to acknowledge the affordability crisis facing American families,” Warren said. “He also dodged a basic question about whether President Trump’s war in Iran has increased gas prices. Phelan also refused to answer simple questions about who won the 2020 presidential election or any other presidential election.”
When asked what he would do if President Trump “asked [him] to claim that a candidate won a presidential election, but that candidate had, in fact, not won the election,” Phelan refused to answer and instead stated that it “is not the role of the CEA Chairman to comment on politics,” according to Warren.
