AI Startup Integrates With Plaid to Allow AI Agents to Securely Access Consumers Banking Info Without Leaving Conversation

SAN FRANCISCO—Artificial intelligence startup Sierra has integrated its AI customer service platform with financial data network Plaid, allowing AI agents to securely access consumers’ banking information—with permission—without requiring users to leave an ongoing conversation, according to reporting by TechCrunch.

The integration is designed to eliminate a common bottleneck in digital financial services, where AI agents are unable to complete tasks that require verified financial information. Instead of handing the customer off to a human representative, Sierra’s AI agents can request consent through Plaid Link, access the necessary banking data and continue processing the request within the same conversation, TechCrunch reported.

Loan Refi Example Cited

One example cited by Sierra involves loan refinancing. Previously, borrowers who did not initially qualify based on credit score often had to wait for a loan officer to manually review income and spending records. Under the new integration, the AI agent can request permission to review cash-flow data through Plaid, evaluate the information and continue the application process without interruption.

Sierra said the same approach can be used for other financial services, including insurance claims and fraud resolution, where AI agents have traditionally been unable to proceed once protected customer data is required.

The integration differs from OpenAI’s partnership with Plaid announced in May 2026, which enabled ChatGPT Pro users to connect their bank accounts so the chatbot could answer questions using real financial data. According to TechCrunch, Sierra’s system is intended not only to answer questions but also to complete transactions and advance customer requests.

Additional Access

The partnership also gives Sierra access to Plaid’s extensive financial network. TechCrunch reported that Plaid connects with more than 12,000 financial institutions and says approximately half of U.S. adults with a bank account have used Plaid Link at least once.

Rather than building its own financial connectivity platform, Sierra is leveraging Plaid’s existing infrastructure to expand the capabilities of its AI agents.

The integration operates through Sierra’s Horizon platform, introduced July 16, which is designed to support AI agents that manage customer relationships over extended periods instead of handling only single interactions.

Explicit Consent Required

Sierra said every bank account connection requires explicit consumer consent through Plaid Link. The company added that it has built compliance safeguards into the platform, including automated monitoring of AI responses and the ability for human employees to intervene in customer conversations when necessary, according to TechCrunch.
