DETROIT —Michigan State University Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) has announced a new partnership with Athletech Academy to provide financial education and workforce-development programs for Detroit youth during the 2026-27 academic year.
Under the agreement, MSUFCU will become Athletech Academy’s Official Financial Empowerment Partner and support three interactive learning experiences beginning this fall.
The programs will cover:
- Budgeting and saving.
- Banking fundamentals.
- Financial decision-making.
- Identity theft and fraud prevention.
- The costs associated with independent living.
Simulations & Collaboration
The organizations said the programs will use simulations, collaborative activities and real-world scenarios rather than traditional classroom instruction.
Athletech Academy uses sports to engage young people in workforce-development education that includes career readiness, artificial intelligence literacy, leadership and other skills.
“Financial empowerment is one of those essential workforce skills,” Athletech Academy founder and Executive Director Chloe Barnes-Henderson said. “By connecting money management, decision-making, and long-term planning to the sports experiences students already know and love, we’re making learning more relevant, engaging, and impactful.”
Creating ‘Opportunities’
Rebecca Surian, MSUFCU vice president of university relations, said the credit union believes financial confidence can create opportunities for young people.
“We’re excited to partner with Athletech Academy to help students develop the knowledge, habits, and decision-making skills that support lifelong success,” Surian said.
