MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — As if credit unions needed any more reasons to be paying attention to AI, Google’s Gemini app has now surpassed one-billion monthly users, making it the fastest-growing product in the company’s history and the 14th Google product to reach that milestone, the company said in a blog post.
The figure represents a sharp increase from the 650 million monthly active users Google reported in October 2025. Google began rolling out the Gemini app in February 2024.
“One-billion-plus people are now using the Gemini app every month to spark new ideas and get things done,” Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in a post on X. “It’s our fastest-growing product ever, and our 14th to hit the 1B-user mark.”
Josh Woodward, vice president of Google Labs, Gemini and AI Studio, said the company’s goal is to make Gemini “the most personal, proactive and powerful assistant.”
Google said Gemini’s growth is being accompanied by increased use of voice, images, cameras and other capabilities beyond traditional text-based AI interactions.
What the Numbers Reveal
According to the company:
• 63% of Gemini users now talk directly to the AI assistant.
• One in five Gemini Live interactions extends beyond voice to include live camera feeds or screen sharing.
• Gemini generates more than 150 million images per day.
• More than 100 million active Gemini users are on Apple’s iOS and macOS platforms.
• Users on Apple platforms submit prompts twice as frequently as users on other platforms.
About the App
Google said Gemini allows users to create images, video and audio from one application, including content that small businesses can use to produce marketing materials.
On Android devices, Gemini can now automate actions across more than 40 apps. Google said the capability can be used for tasks such as booking rides and making restaurant reservations.
AI Assistants Attract Massive Audiences
Google’s milestone comes amid rapid consumer adoption of generative AI assistants and intensifying competition among Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and other technology companies.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT reached one-billion global monthly active users in May, about three years after its launch, according to previously reported figures. At that time, ChatGPT was recording year-over-year user growth of 62%.
Anthropic’s Claude had about 56 million global monthly active users at the time, with year-over-year growth of 640%.
Google launched the Gemini mobile experience in February 2024, introducing a dedicated Gemini application for Android while integrating Gemini capabilities into the Google app for Apple’s iOS.
Centerpiece of Strategy
Gemini has since become a centerpiece of Google’s broader AI strategy, with the company increasingly integrating the technology across its products and services.
