CHADDS FORD, Penn. — Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union’s website and mobile app remained inaccessible Tuesday as a digital outage affecting the suburban Philadelphia institution stretched into a second day, with one news outlet reporting it encountered a strange claim related to the site.
6ABC Action News reported that members from across the Philadelphia tri-state area contacted it to report they were unable to access the $2.2-billion credit union’s website or mobile app and expressed concerns about their accounts.
A review by the CU Daily as of the publishing of this reporting found the site was still down.
The outage took an unusual turn when Action News reported that it found that Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union’s main website was displaying an offer to purchase the domain for $10,000 through GoDaddy.
Under Control of Individual Potentially in Saudi Arabia
According to records reviewed by 6ABC, the domain appeared to have been re-registered at 2:17 p.m. Monday and was under the control of an individual possibly located in Saudi Arabia.
It was not immediately clear how the domain came to be re-registered or whether the incident was related to a cybersecurity breach, the news outlet said.
Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union’s Facebook page and member hotline said the credit union was experiencing technical issues and was working to restore service, according to 6ABC.
Action News said it was unable to reach a representative of the credit union for additional comment outside regular banking hours.
