TUCSON, Ariz. — Tucson Federal Credit Union said it is launching a new music competition for young Southern Arizona musicians, with winners receiving studio recording time, musical equipment and opportunities to open for larger regional shows.
The credit union said Rock the Old Pueblo: Battle of the Bands will be held Oct. 31 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at La Rosa in Tucson. The competition is open to Tucson-area musicians ages 12 to 25.
Tucson Federal Credit Union said it created the event in response to cuts in funding for band, orchestra and choir programs in Tucson-area public schools and to provide young musicians with additional opportunities to perform and develop their skills.
10 Acts to Compete
Ten acts will perform before an all-ages audience and a panel of judges from Tucson radio and the regional music industry, according to the credit union.
The competition will have two rounds. Each act will initially perform a cover song, with finalists returning to perform an original song.
Judges will consider songwriting, performance and stagecraft, along with audience response.
The prize package includes eight hours of studio recording time at Solid Rock in Phoenix, guitars and other musical equipment from local partners and opportunities to serve as an opening act at larger regional shows. Each participating act also will receive feedback and follow-up from the judges.
‘Investment in Young People’
Tucson Federal Credit Union President and CEO Matthew Gaspari said the credit union views the competition as an investment in young people and the broader community.
“Rock the Old Pueblo is about creating opportunities for young people to express themselves through music, build confidence, and gain experiences that can positively shape their future,” Gaspari said.
He said the credit union chose to provide experiences and resources rather than simply offering winners a cash prize.
“Rather than simply awarding a cash prize, we’re providing opportunities that help these talented musicians develop their craft and create long lasting memories,” Gaspari said.
Annual Event Planned
Tucson Federal Credit Union said it hopes to make Rock the Old Pueblo an annual fall event showcasing young musicians from across Southern Arizona.
The credit union said the competition is intended to celebrate creativity, encourage emerging musicians and bring the Tucson community together.
General admission is $15, with tickets available in advance online. Doors will open at 10 a.m., one hour before the competition begins.
