MARSHFIELD, Wis. — An injured gull found outside Marshfield Medical Center Credit Union on Thursday morning is headed to a wildlife rehabilitation center after a credit union employee and local police helped capture it.
Martin Chy, a member services officer at the credit union, spotted the bird as he arrived for work. “At first I thought it was trash by the building,” Chy told OnFocus News. “I went to pick it up and noticed it was a big gull just sitting there.”
A large fishing lure was caught on the gull’s bill. Chy called dispatch, and two Marshfield police officers helped safely capture the bird, according to OnFocus News.
A Reminder About Fishing Line
The gull is being taken to Raptor Education Group Inc., a nonprofit in Antigo that rehabilitates injured and orphaned native birds.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources warns that discarded fishing line and tackle can entangle or be swallowed by wildlife. Anglers should retrieve snagged gear when it is safe to do so and properly dispose of used line.
Chy offered a lighter explanation for the bird’s choice of landing spot: “I think it chose MMCCU because we’re a credit union and credit unions care.”
