Video Goes Viral After Claiming Gas Pump Stickers Can Steal Data

MENLO PARK, Calif.–A video that has gone viral in social media claims scammers are attaching stickers embedded with microchips to gas pumps and are stealing card information.

The videos have seen millions of views even though the claim has ultimately proven to be false.

The video, primarily circulating on Facebook, claim these stickers are able to grab cardholders’ data when tap-and-pay is used. But a number of media outlets that have inspected the stickers say that once they are peeled off and turned over, there is no microchip or other technology that would help scammers.

One media outlet reported it spoke with two experts in payment processing systems for gas stations who said they were unaware of any chip technology that could fit inside a sticker like the one shown in the video.
