Alleged CU Robber Arrested, Thanks to a Third Grader’s Homework Assignment

MCKEESPORT, Pa. — An alleged robber accused of holding up a western Pennsylvania credit union was identified after investigators traced a note left at the scene to a third grader’s homework assignment.

Keith Graves Jr. is wanted in connection with the May 8 robbery of Century Heritage Federal Credit Union in the Olympia Shopping Center in McKeesport, according to a criminal complaint cited by CBS News.

The Allegheny County Police Department said officers were called around 1:30 p.m. to assist Versailles Borough police following the reported robbery.

Investigators said Graves initially entered the credit union and told employees he wanted to open an account for himself and his son, but did not have proper identification, CBS News reported. Police said the man later returned carrying a folded note that demanded $50,000. According to investigators, he then displayed a rifle and told a teller, “I ain’t [expletive] joking.”

What Footage Revealed

Authorities said a teller and another employee handed over cash from two drawers totaling just under $2,300.

Detectives reviewing surveillance footage from cameras at the shopping plaza said the suspect fled the scene on a self-propelled scooter.

After interviewing witnesses and employees, investigators learned the demand note had been left behind inside the credit union, CBS News reported. Authorities later determined the paper used for the note was linked to a third grader’s homework assignment, which helped identify Graves as a suspect.
