NEW YORK — American Express said it plans to extend its customer protections to purchases made by registered artificial intelligence agents, as part of a broader push into what it describes as “agent-powered” commerce, according to reporting/
The initiative, called Amex Agent Purchase Protection, would cover eligible card members for certain charges stemming from errors made by AI agents, provided the customer has authorized the agent to make a purchase and the agent submits authenticated purchase intent to American Express, the company said.

“As commerce becomes more agent-powered, trust becomes the defining factor,” Luke Gebb, executive vice president and head of global innovation at American Express, said in a statement. “Our goal is to ensure that when an agent acts on a Card Member’s behalf, the identities of both the human and the agent are authenticated and the intent is clear — so that every Amex-enabled transaction reflects the backing and seamless experience that define our brand.”
New Developer Tool
American Express also said it is launching a new developer tool aimed at supporting AI-driven transactions. The company’s Agentic Commerce Experiences (ACE), developer kit will provide technical specifications to integrate American Express-issued cards and membership benefits into AI-powered platforms.
The company said the kit is designed to work with existing and emerging protocols and will give developers access to features including agent registration, account enablement, intent intelligence, payment credentials and cart context.
“As [AI agent] capabilities evolve, Card Members and Merchants will expect the same level of trust and security that they always relied on from American Express,” Gebb said. “The ACE Developer Kit enables this in AI-powered commerce.”
