WASHINGTON—America’s Credit Unions said it is hopeful the Senate Banking Committee will schedule a hearing in June for NCUA Board nominee John Crews.
As the CU Daily reported here, Crews was officially nominated in early May to fill the seat currently held by Chairman Kyle Hauptman. Hauptman’s term expired in August 2025, and he has been nominated for a seat on the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. Hauptman has said he will remain on the board until a successor is nominated and approved by the Senate.

Crews is the assistant secretary for financial institutions policy in the Treasury department. He was appointed to the position in mid-2025 and has a long history in Washington. Prior to joining the Treasury Department, he served as a policy advisor to Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), where he covered economic and financial services policy, and prior to that was the policy director of the Senate Banking Committee.
‘Need to Get This Moving’
Greg Mesack, SVP-advocacy with America’s Credit Unions, said the trade group continues to be in touch Senate Banking and has reminded the committee that Hauptman’s term is expired.
“We’re all hopeful this hearing will take place in June,” said Mesack. “We need to get this confirmation moving.”
If confirmed, Crews’ term would run through August 2031.
The status of the NCUA board remains in flux. Two board members fired by President Trump, Todd Harper and Tonya Otsuka, have filed suit over their dismissals with the court in that case awaiting a decision from the Supreme Court in similar case before ruling.
