Crappy Night: Police Respond to ‘Robber’ in Branch, But It’s Just Man Who Fell Asleep in Bathroom

POCATELLO, Idaho— Numerous Pocatello police officers responded to a what was thought to be a robbery at a credit union branch—but it was just a man who had fallen asleep in the credit union’s restroom and awoke around 7:15 p.m. to find himself alone and locked inside.

Security cameras at the Mountain America Credit Union on the 1000 block of Yellowstone Avenue had detected the man walking around inside the building, setting off the branch’s alarm system and triggering the massive police response, the Idaho State Journal reported.

“A police dog was brought in and officers prepared to enter the bank around 8 p.m. fully expecting to arrest the ‘robber’,” the State Journal stated. “But when police announced the K9 would be released into the credit union to confront the man, he immediately surrendered.”

‘Detained & Released’

According to the report, police questioned the man afterward and learned that he had entered the men’s room while the credit union was open, fell asleep in a bathroom stall and awoke after the branch had closed.

“Police said the man panicked when he awoke and realized what had happened. He then set off the credit union’s alarm system when he started walking around to find a way out of the locked building,” the State Journal reported. “Police briefly detained the man following his surrender and then released him.”
