WASHINGTON–Credit unions are watching a number of congressional hearings this week.

Those hearings include:

Wednesday

Senate Committee on Aging: Empowering Seniors through Financial Literacy: Tools to Protect Savings, Prevent Fraud, and Promote Independence

The hearing is set for 3:30 p.m.

“The hearing is focused on empowering seniors through financial literacy and tools to protect savings independence,” said Jason Stverak, chief advocacy officer with the Defense Credit union Council. “That’s obviously right in the wheelhouse of not only defense credit unions but every credit union that serves this vulnerable population. They are afraid of being targeted by scammers. We want to make sure the committee does understand and all the great work that credit unions are doing all across this country.”

House Budget Committee: Full Committee Hearing: The President’s Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Request

The hearing is scheduled for 10:15 a.m.

Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought is to testify.

“Obviously, we will make sure to communicate to the committee our concerned about what’s in the president’s budget,” said Stverak. “As we have expressed before, the zeroing out or elimination of the CDFI funding is at the top of that list.”

Thursday

Senate Budget Committee: The President’s Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Proposal

The hearing is set for 10 a.m.

Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought will again testify.

House Committee on Financial Services Subcommittee on Financial Institutions: Hearing Entitled: Promoting Access to Credit for Everyday Americans

The hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Once again we’re going to highlight all the great work defense credit unions and the entire credit union movement is doing to already fulfill this goal,” said Stverak. “We want to be recognized by the committee and encourage the full House Financial Services committee to move forward on credit union package as they have moved forward on community banking and other banking-related provisions.”
