Following Acquisition, Fifth Third Bank to Close 75 Branches Across Michigan

CINCINNATI — Fifth Third Bank has finalized plans to close 75 branches across Michigan in September, including dozens of locations acquired from Comerica Bank, as part of an effort to streamline its retail network and reduce overlapping operations.

According to Fifth Third Bank, 55 of the locations slated for closure are former Comerica branches, while the remaining 20 are existing Fifth Third financial centers.

The bank said the consolidations are designed to create a more efficient branch network while maintaining access to banking services for customers throughout the state.

In a statement, Fifth Third said it is “building a stronger, more efficient branch network that supports customers today and positions the Bank for long-term sustainable growth in Michigan and across our expanded footprint.”

Other Options Within One Mile

The bank said most customers affected by the closures will continue to have convenient access to in-person banking services, noting that the majority of the branches being shuttered have another Fifth Third location within one mile.

Following the closures, Fifth Third said it will continue operating 227 branches across Michigan, including 116 locations in the five-county Metro Detroit region.

The bank said its remaining Michigan footprint will span:

  • 227 financial centers statewide
  • 39 counties
  • Nearly 140 communities

According to Fifth Third, the consolidation effort is focused primarily on eliminating overlapping locations while preserving customer access to branch services.
