TUCSON, Ariz. — Hughes Federal Credit Union has pledged $5 million toward the expansion of the historic Fox Tucson Theatre, becoming the naming sponsor of a new event center planned as part of the theater’s $26.6 million capital campaign.
The contribution marks a significant milestone for the fundraising effort, which aims to create a larger performing arts and community campus in downtown Tucson.
KGUN reported that, under the agreement, the new facility will be known as the Hughes Federal Credit Union Event Center at the Fox, or the Hughes Center at the Fox. The center will be constructed adjacent to the nearly century-old theater and serve as the complex’s Stone Avenue entrance.

According to a news release cited by KGUN, the new building will provide additional space for performances, educational programming and community events.
Strong Demand
The Fox Tucson Theatre has been pursuing the expansion as demand for programming and community use continues to outgrow the capacity of its existing facility. Theater officials said the project will enable the organization to broaden its educational offerings and create more flexible event space.
The $5 million commitment brings the capital campaign to approximately the halfway mark, KGUN reported.
As part of the initiative, Hughes Federal Credit Union is challenging other donors to support the project by making gifts or pledges of at least $100,000 before the end of 2026.
About the Project
When completed, the expanded campus is expected to attract more than 150,000 visitors annually, according to the news release cited by KGUN. Theater officials estimate the project could generate roughly $18 million a year in economic activity through tourism, events and related spending.
The Fox Tucson Theatre opened in 1930 and is one of Tucson’s best-known historic landmarks. The expansion is intended to strengthen its role as a cultural and community gathering place while increasing its capacity to host performances and events.
