KANSAS CITY, Mo.–Mazuma Credit Union’s Deborah “Debbie” Baumann Barnett has been inducted into the Cornerstone League Hall of Fame, which honors industry professionals for outstanding careers in service to the credit union movement.
Baumann received the honor at an awards luncheon in Oklahoma City as part of IMPACT 2026, Cornerstone’s Annual Meeting, and was cheered by former colleagues from Mazuma and across the region. The Cornerstone League represents nearly 600 credit unions across Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas.
A Mazuma Team Member from 1982 through 2025, Baumann served the credit union and its members in a variety of roles over the years. From Marketing Manager to VP of Facilities Management, Debbie grew alongside the organization while helping shape its culture of service and dedication to making a positive impact in Kansas City, the credit union said.
As a hands-on contributor in the broader credit union movement, Baumann was a long-standing leader with the Kansas City Chapter of Credit Unions (among many other councils and associations), through which she supported and strengthened peer institutions by sharing resources, insights, and opportunities for collaboration. A winner of the Missouri Credit Union League Pioneer Award, she passionately upheld the value of cooperative financial institutions and the credit union principle of people helping people.
National Efforts
On the national level, Baumann’s credit union advocacy included meetings on Capitol Hill in support of HR 1151, the Credit Union Membership Access Act, where she brought grassroots voices to the forefront to protect and expand access to member-owned financial services. She served for years on America’s Credit Unions’ (formerly the Credit Union National Association) Operations, Sales, and Service Council, shaping national outcomes that translated into local impact for Mazuma’s Kansas City membership.
An avid volunteer, Debbie’s ongoing legacy of service is exemplified by well over 1,000 hours of volunteer time during her last 3 years with Mazuma alone, including 40 hours of Paid Volunteer Time through the Credit Union’s 40 Hours for Good program. Beneficiaries of her time and talent include multiple Chambers of Commerce, Brush Creek Community Partners, KC Pet Project, and deep engagement with Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America), among many others.
Enthusiastic Support
Baumann is enthusiastically celebrated by her former colleagues at Mazuma for this well-deserved honor.
“We couldn’t be more proud to see Debbie recognized for her outstanding impact on Mazuma’s Members and the credit union movement,” said President and CEO Deonne Christensen. “Her dedicated leadership and consistent care for our Members and team helped us grow into the institution we are today – a credit union dedicated to Making Kansas City a Better Place to Live, Work, and Bank.”
As she accepted her award, Baumann expressed gratitude for her community at Mazuma, “whose passion for the work we did together for our Members kept me motivated and inspired,” saying “I’m ready to go back to enjoying my retirement, but this honor is an incredible way to celebrate (my) career.”
