MSUFCU Opens New Youth-Focused Branch Called ‘Money Lab’

EAST LANSING, Mich. — More than 150 community members attended the grand opening of a new youth-focused banking branch created by MSU Federal Credit Union that combines financial education with interactive play, according to the credit union.

The facility, called the Money Lab, is located in MSUFCU’s 311 Abbot building and is designed to help children learn basic financial concepts through hands-on activities while also functioning as a fully operational credit union branch, the credit union said.

According to MSUFCU, the opening celebration featured activities including money bank painting, button making, a dream wall and a community photo booth with an appearance by MSU’s Zeke the Wonderdog mascot. The event attracted local families, civic leaders and youth participants.

“We designed this space to provide children a place where they can explore, learn, and build confidence with money in a way that feels fun and approachable,” MSUFCU President and CEO April Clobes said in a statement. “Through hands-on opportunities to participate in real banking activities, we’re helping make financial education more engaging, meaningful, and memorable.”

Specialized Accounts Can be Opened

MSUFCU said the Money Lab allows youth members, with parental guidance, to open specialized savings accounts, process transactions and make deposits or withdrawals. The branch also includes educational features such as a Financial Table of Elements, a Lite-Brite-style interactive wall, a collaborative LEGO display and a designated “FUNtivity Zone.”

Clobes said the goal is to encourage children to ask questions about money and develop financial confidence at an early age.

“The habits we develop early can have a lasting impact on our financial future,” Clobes said. “When families learn and grow together, it strengthens our entire community.”

According to MSUFCU, participation in the Money Lab requires an active youth account, which can be opened at the branch.

The credit union said the branch is open to the general public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Wednesday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. are reserved for schools, youth organizations and other educational groups.
